Today’s reading is Judges 17-18.

Many misunderstand the remainder of Judges. Critics pull it out of context to highlight how awful God really is allowing such terrible situations. These have entirely missed the point. The remainder of Judges is about what happens when people do what is right in their own eyes. When people abandon God’s way, when people cease to do what is right in God’s eyes. In fact, when people act a lot like people are acting today. Then these very awful things happen. Of course, that is why we need a Savior, an ultimate Judge Deliverer. Too often we’ve done what is right in the wrong eyes. Our only hope and help is the real Judge Deliverer, Jesus.

Tomorrow’s reading is Judges 19-20.

A Word for Our Kids

Hey kids, did it shock you to hear Micah’s mother say she wanted to dedicate silver to the Lord, but she did so by making an idol? That should be shocking. It goes completely against the first two of Israel’s 10 commandments. The problem is, I think Micah’s mom really did think she was honoring the real God, Yahweh. And that is what happens when we allow the world to influence us. Something seems right and seems like it honors God, but it actually defies His will. That is why we should never simply do what feels right and instead should always go back to God’s revealed will to see what He really wants. Only that will honor God.
