Today’s reading is Exodus 21-22.
God gave the 10 Commandments, but then He expounded and expanded. In the following chapters He gave explanations and greater definitions to those 10. He delineated different aspects to the laws on murder, theft, adultery, honoring parents, honoring God. Obedience to God and His covenant commands is serious business. While this is not the law for Christ’s church, we do gain insight to God and His will from it. Though there are some technical dealings with some special situations, in general, as you read these laws you really can see how they are summed up by statements like, “Love God and your neighbor,” and “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” Keep that in mind as we continue reading these laws. Ask yourself today how you are treating the folks around you. And remember, love the Lord your God and your neighbor, all the Law and the Prophets hang on this.
Tomorrow’s reading is Exodus 23-24.
A Word for Our Kids
Hey kids, I know there were a lot of laws and statements in today’s reading. They may have all run together for you. However, I hope you picked up on the ones about parents. Under the Law of Moses, children who struck their parents and who cursed or reviled their parents were to be executed. Wow! Seems harsh. Yet it explains to us how important God believes parents are. Remember, the command to honor and obey your parents is repeated and carried over into the New Testament. While the New Covenant doesn’t call for execution, please understand how important God believes honoring and obeying your parents really is. Give God the glory by listening to the parents He gave you.
