Today’s reading is Genesis 47-48.

Think about the original audience of Genesis for a moment, the wilderness wandering Jews who were preparing to conquer and take possession of the land God had given them. Almost every part of this book is designed to encourage those Jews to take the land, and this account is no different. Did you notice what kind of land God gave them when they left Canaan and came into Egypt? They were given Goshen, described several times as “the best of the land.” What is Israel hearing? Even when God took them into Egypt, He gave them the best of the land. He’ll do so again. What are we hearing? God takes care of His people no matter what else is going on around us. God’s eternal plans for you are best. Hang on to Him no matter what goes on between now and then.

Tomorrow’s reading is Genesis 49-50.

A Word for Our Kids

Hey kids, did you notice what happened to Pharaoh? He blessed Jacob, Joseph, and their families, the descendants of Abraham, and he got blessed in return. By the time Joseph is done, Pharaoh personally owns most of the land and people of Egypt. What had God promised Abraham? “I will bless those who bless you.” It happened. Keep that in mind today. We, according to Galatians 3:27-29, who have been  baptized into Christ are the descendants of Abraham. We are blessed and those who bless us will be blessed. Keep this in mind when you see the next Pharaoh when we get to Exodus, who doesn’t bless Abraham’s descendants. Watch what happens to him. That will certainly tell you whose side you want to be on.
